  2. MONDAY 22ND MAY From 9am
  3. MONDAY 12TH JUNE From 9am
  4. MONDAY 26TH JUNE From 9am

The theme of this year’s carnival event is Learning from Legends.

The theme celebrates the legends of the community, such as parents, teachers, cleaners, and doctors, and encourages respect and celebration of these individuals. St Pauls, with its rich history of Caribbean and more recent cultures, is a place of cultural understanding and friendliness. The theme emphasizes the sharing of knowledge and skills, as the carnival provides opportunities for community members to participate in the procession.

This year’s theme is particularly poignant to Bristol’s African Caribbean community as 2023 marks 60 years since Bristol’s Bus Boycott. This year also sees the 75th anniversary of HMT Empire Windrush arriving in Britain on 22 June 1948.

St Pauls Carnival is a community funded event that and we are encouraging supporters to donate and contribute to preserve the future of the full-scale annual celebration of culture and heritage.

Alongside a street party to remember, our Carnival 365 programme is all about community and celebrating our heritage and culture. Through an innovative range of school workshops and community work with the country’s leading Carnival practitioners, we spread the traditions of Carnival all year round. From digital workshops, traditional costume making to Black History Month outreach and steelpan drumming lessons, we bring the spirit of Carnival to schools and the community, 365 days a year.

2023 will be the first full St Pauls Carnival for chair Levi Roots, who was appointed in 2021.
