We Don’t Do That Here, our joint audio production with Ujima Radio, has been shortlisted for a British Journalism Award.
The documentary, produced by Marcus Smith and Miranda Rae, is nominated in the ‘Social Affairs, Diversity & Inclusion’ category, sponsored by the Aziz Foundation. It comes just weeks after the series won Gold for News, Journalism & Factual Storytelling of the Year at the 2026 Community Radio Awards.

Now in their 15th year, the British Journalism Awards celebrate work that is revelatory, has real-world impact and serves the public interest. This year, 73 independent judges chose the shortlist from 695 entries, judging the quality of the stories regardless of the size of the newsroom behind them.
In Good Company
We Don’t Do That Here is the only community radio entry in the category, shortlisted alongside work from:
- The Guardian
- The Bureau of Investigative Journalism
- Index on Censorship
- The New Humanitarian
- Liberty Investigates
- The Londoner
It’s a great year for Bristol journalism too. Our friends at The Bristol Cable have been shortlisted for Local Journalism for We’ve Got Your Boy. Congratulations to them and to every finalist.
Marcus Smith, producer of We Don’t Do That Here, said:
“To see a Bristol community radio series on the same shortlist as The Guardian and the Bureau of Investigative Journalism is extraordinary. We don’t have their budgets, but we do have something just as valuable: people across this city who trusted us with their stories. This nomination shows that community radio can produce journalism that stands alongside the very best in the country.”

What’s Next
The winners will be announced at a gala dinner hosted by Rory Bremner at London’s Hilton Bankside on Thursday 10 December. Fingers crossed!
Thank you to Ujima Radio, to everyone who shared their story with us, and to the volunteers who make BCfm what it is.
