It is with deep sorrow that BCfm Radio announces the sudden passing of Jerry Cowhig MBE on Friday, 23 May 2025, at the age of 79. Jerry was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, dear friend, accomplished broadcaster, arts champion, and tireless volunteer.
A Life Well Lived
Born on 5 October 1945, Jerry built a distinguished career in science publishing. Most notably, he served as Managing Director of IOP Publishing in Bristol from 1995, overseeing its growth to more than 60 scientific journals. In 2010, in recognition of his outstanding services to science, he was awarded an MBE, presented by the Princess Royal on his 65th birthday, a fitting capstone to his professional achievements.

After retirement, Jerry poured his energy into art and culture across Bristol. He served as a trustee, board member, adviser, and benefactor to several organisations, including Bristol Ensemble (where he was chair of the Board of Trustees). He also supported Royal West of England Academy, Myeloma UK, and of course, BCfm, leaving an enduring legacy beyond broadcasting.
The Classical Hour
For many years, Jerry graced BCfm’s airwaves every Friday at 9 am, presenting The Classical Hour, a show he described as “classical music to soothe and inspire”. His calm, measured delivery was born of genuine passion, a passion for music and for sharing its beauty with others.
A Board Member Like No Other
Jerry also served on the BCfm Board of Trustees for several years, according to fellow Trustee and Presenter Sherrie Eugene‑Hart:
“He supported not only on a strategic level but a practical one too. At social events, he would always arrive clutching a carrier bag. I never knew what was in it, but it seemed important. At meetings Jerry was meticulous and always paid attention to detail. If he didn’t understand, he would make you make him understand and as a result it helped our board to run smoothly.”
His kindness, generosity, and attention to detail were the hallmarks of his service:
“Jerry’s kindness will always be remembered… His legacy at BCfm will live on in his music and his attention to detail. Certainly one of a kind. Thank you Jerry. RIP.”
His Final Broadcast and a Lasting Tribute
In a poignant testament to his dedication, Jerry recorded and broadcast The Classical Hour on the morning of his passing, just hours before he passed away. You can listen below to this final show on a BCfm podcast alongside a special Tribute to Jerry Cowhig, hosted by Anneka Sutcliffe and Pat Hart, featuring tributes, music and memories dedicated to him.
From now on, Friday mornings at 9 am will be forever known as “Classical Hour”, honouring his years of broadcasting that touched so many.
Service Details & How to Contribute
Jerry’s funeral took place on Wednesday, 9 July, at St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol. In lieu of flowers, donations were kindly directed to charities cherished by him and his family, including Bristol Ensemble, Royal West of England Academy, Myeloma UK, and BCfm.
A Lasting Legacy
Jerry Cowhig’s life was defined by dedication, to his family, his work, and his community. Whether seated in the boardroom or behind the microphone, he brought a rare blend of warmth, humility, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. Both BCfm’s Board and its listeners have lost a true friend, one whose steady hand helped guide the station through the many highs and lows that come with community radio.
His presence will be profoundly missed, but through every note of classical music he so lovingly curated and every detail he ensured was impeccable, his spirit remains.
Thank you, Jerry. Your mellow voice, careful stewardship, and generous heart will echo in BCfm and Bristol for years to come. Rest in peace, dear friend.
On behalf of everyone at BCfm and the Bristol community, we send our condolences to Jerry’s family, and our gratitude to all who knew and loved him.
